How To Care For Your Hardwood Floors

Most people tend to think that hardwood floor cleaning is straightforward, and it is, but only to a point. But how do you care for them properly?

The common answer is sweeping or vacuuming regularly and mopping occasionally. If you’re sweeping or vacuuming up debris every few days, that’s great! Don’t let that fall by the wayside because clearing the debris off your wood floors will minimize the opportunities for hard particles to wear away at the surface of your flooring. However, we do recommend sweeping with a soft, dry dust mop rather than a harder bristled broom to minimize abrasions and help keep your wood floors shining.

Mopping, however, is a different story. It can actually cause damage to your hardwood floors if you’re not careful! In general, yes, mopping your floors is a good idea. It’s important to clean up liquid spills when they happen and mopping can also help keep your wood floors looking shiny and in great condition. However, and this is a pretty big however, mopping the wrong way can actually cause more damage to your hardwood floors than the minor damage caused by spills or abrasive debris. Remember that wood floors are made of natural, porous materials.

This matters for two reasons:

1. Since hardwood flooring is natural, it's coated in a protective lacquer to help it last. Using the wrong cleaning solutions can cause that protective top coat to wear away more quickly, eventually wrecking your floors entirely.

2. Since hardwood floors are porous, they absorb liquids. That protective lacquer helps prevent moisture absorption, but it can only work so hard. If you leave excess water lying on your hardwoods every time you mop, it will seep into any weak spots in the protective coating, and into the cracks between boards, causing your wood floors to warp.

In order to guard against damage to your wood flooring, you’ll need to be sure you’re using the right cleaning solutions for hardwood floors and to mop up as much excess water as possible. As a good rule of thumb, if you can see standing water on the floor after you’ve finished a room, you’ve been using too much water. Thoroughly wring out your mop and go over everything again to absorb as much of that water as possible.

Most people instinctively grab whatever they can find underneath the kitchen sink or laundry room and start pouring heaps of random cleaning chemicals all over the bleach spills, hoping they will magically disappear. In reality, there are several steps that need to be taken before dyeing can even begin.
Here’s what we do:

1. Determine the carpet fiber type. Since not all carpet types can be dyed, fiber identification is always the first step.
2. Test the pH levels of the spot(s). As stated previously, most people pour heaps of cleaning products onto bleach spills hoping for a miracle. The dye sites must be free of any chemicals or other residues before anything else can take place. That’s why we test the pH levels to ensure the conditions are right for effective carpet dyeing.
3. Neutralize the bleach. Bleach is still active until it’s neutralized. Fresh bleach is extremely difficult to neutralize, so it’s best to wait at least a week after the spill has occurred to begin color repair. If you don’t have a week, that’s OK. It can still be done. It’s just much more time-consuming.
4. Extract. The bleach neutralizer must be extracted before any dyeing takes place.
5. Create a custom dye formula. In order to know how to create your custom dye formula, you’ll need to have a pretty good understanding of color theory and color loss. This isn’t something that the average homeowner knows. But we’re at SimplyPure Cleaning Company know!
6. Dye affected areas only. Forget what you’ve seen on the Internet about crayons, pastels, coffee grounds or anything of the like to try and create your own carpet paint. These materials are not feasible for dyeing and these makeshift carpet paints can actually do more harm than good.
